Pakistan

The US killed four “Arab” and four Taliban fighters in a drone strike in the Shawal Valley in North Waziristan. The military killed “an al Qaeda-linked foreign militant” and five fighters as they attacked a checkpoint in Thall.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed an Afghan Local Police commander, two officers, and six civilians in a bombing in Zabul. More than 80 British military advisers assisted the Afghan military in an operation to keep the Taliban from retaking control of the Sangin district in Helmand.


Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq killed 40 civilians in a series of bombings in predominantly Shia neighborhoods in Baghdad. Bombings killed 11 more civilians in Al Kut and Basrah. More than 500 Iraqis have been killed in terrorist attacks this month.


Syria

The Liwa’ al-Islam brigade reportedly used an advanced antiaircraft rocket to destroy a helicopter near Damascus International airport, killing the crew. Clashes between Kurdish and Islamist fighters continued in Hasaka and Aleppo; several fighters and one commander from each side were killed.


Egypt

Militants attacked more than eight security installations in the Sinai, killing at least one soldier. Clashes in Port Said killed at least three people. Palestinian Territories

While in Cairo, President Abbas said he would not accept any Israelis in a future Palestinian state. Israeli authorities plan to provide an increased amount of fuel and food to the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority praised Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli prisons for security offenses as “strugglers for their freedom and not terrorists.”

France congratulated Mali on the smooth running of its first presidential election since a military coup in March 2012. Yesterday, Shabaab claimed it killed 12 “African Crusaders” in a series of seven bombings in the port town of Marka. The military executed via firing squad four soldiers who were convicted of murder.

Security agencies issued a “red alert” after receiving credible intelligence of bombings being planned for locations inside the country near the end of Ramadan. Afghanistan

The Afghan military claimed that more than 100 Taliban fighters and nine Afghan soldiers were killed during an operation to clear the Taliban from areas of Logar and Paktia. The Taliban killed three civilians in an IED attack in Farah and an ISAF soldier in a firefight in central Afghanistan.






Iraq

A suicide bomber killed eight members of a Kurdish security force during an attack on a patrol in Tuz Khurmatu. Four civilians were killed in two separate bombings in Baghdad. A bombing at a pipeline in northern Iraq shut down oil exports to Turkey.




Israel

The cabinet approved a plan to see any peace deal with the Palestinians put to a referendum. The cabinet also approved the staged release of 104 Palestinian prisoners.
