The family of convicted USS Cole bomber Fahd al Quso warned Shabwa’s governor not to rearrest him. Al Quso was indicted in the US after escaping from Yemeni jail in 2003. He was recaptured, and the US learned in February 2008 that al Quso was secretly released months earlier.

Baitullah Mehsud’s forces overran Jandola after killing seven pro-government tribesmen. The Taliban kidnapped 17 government paramilitaries after storming checkpoints in Khyber. The government of the Northwest Frontier Province will honor the peace agreement with the Swat Taliban; sharia law will be implemented and charges against 600 Taliban fighters will be dropped.


Afghanistan

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said three additional combat brigades are needed in Afghanistan. Five civilians were killed and 19 were wounded in a suicide attack on a Coalition convoy in Herat province. Afghan and Coalition forces killed “several” Taliban fighters and detained 11 during fighting in Helmand and Ghazni province.

Lebanon

The Army has intervened in Tripoli after clashes between pro-government forces and Hezbollah entered the second day. Eight were killed and 44 were wounded in the fighting. A senior leader in Jund al Sham was wounded in an explosion in Ein al Hilwah.
