General Dostum has been suspended as chief of staff to the military’s commander-in-chief. Afghan soldiers detained 11 Taliban fighters and seized 1,000 pounds of heroin in Helmand province. Afghan and Coaliton forces detained 11 Taliban fighters in Zabul province.

The Pakistan People’s Party is exploring forming a coalition government with the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. The former railways minister said the Lal Masjid raid was responsible for the PML-Q’s electoral defeat. Security forces arrested 75 suspected Taliban in Swat.

The military captured Mohamad Baehaqi, a Jemaah Islamiyah operative behind the bombings in North Cotabato in October 2006. The FBI is conducting forensic tests to see if the body found in Tawi-Tawi is that of Jemaah Islamiyah master bomber Dulmatin. Indonesian authorities do not believe Dulmatin is dead.



Algeria

Algerian security forces killed five al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters in Tubsa. An Algerian politician escaped an assassination attempt believed to have conducted by al Qaeda. The government is monitoring religious institutions and conducting an awareness campaign to thwart terrorist recruiting.


Iraq

Coalition forces detained six al Qaeda operatives during raids in central and northern Iraq. Police arrested six wanted insurgents in Kirkuk. Police arrested 11 members of the Soldiers of Heaven in Hillah. One Iraqi soldier was killed and three were wounded in a suicide attack targeting an Iraqi Army checkpoint in western Mosul.

The Pakistan People’s Party is set to win the election as both Musharraf and the pro-Taliban Muttahida Majlis-e-Amil suffered heavy defeats at the polls. Morocco

Moroccan security forces detained 23 members of a jihadist terror cell planning attacks in northern Africa. Abdel Qader Belaraj, the leader of the cell, was among those captured. The leaders of two political parties are also believed to be members of the terror cell.
