Somalia

Two people were killed during after Shabaab attacked a police station north of Mogadishu. Shabaab denied that deputy leader Sheikh Robow granted an interview with a Somali news outlet.


Nigeria

Boko Haram fighters gunned down a police inspector as he was shopping at a market in Maiduguri. Boko Haram fighters overran a police station in Damagun in Yobe state.


France

Police found an abandoned car belonging to a neighbor of Toulouse gunman Mohamed Merah who may be a third accomplice in the killing spree. Algerian authorities cited security reasons for denying the request of Merah’s family to have him buried in Algeria. Merah’s father is suing French police over his son’s death.


Afghanistan

More than a dozen Taliban fighters and three Afghan security personnel were killed during clashes throughout Afghanistan. Twelve Taliban fighters in Herat and 10 more in Faryab reconciled with the government. US forces have assigned soldiers to watch over their Afghan counterparts.

Yemen

“Gunmen” kidnapped a Saudi diplomat in the southern city of Aden. The government urged Pakistan to free Amal al Sadeh, one of Osama bin Laden’s wives, and her four children.




Syria

Violence in Syria continued in spite of President Assad’s acceptance of a peace plan on Monday. The UN secretary general and Arab foreign ministers urged President Assad to implement the plan.


Iran

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan arrived in Tehran for talks over Syria and Iran’s nuclear program. Iran’s foreign minister announced a date, April 13, for renewed nuclear talks with the group of the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany.


Qatar

Tiny Qatar played outsized role as Arab League president. Will it last?


Sudan

Sudan and South Sudan clashed in a series of battles along their border. Each accused the other of striking first. Sudan’s president canceled a summit in which two landmark agreements with South Sudan were to be signed.


Libya

A tribe in southern Libya threatened to form a separate state after bloody clashes with a rival tribe. Earlier this month a tribe in eastern Libya also threatened to form a separate state.

Egyptian army takes on Islamists to retain power




Somalia

Six people were killed during clashes between Shabaab and Kenyan forces in Hosingo. Shabaab assassinated a senior commander in the Criminal Investigation Department in Mogadishu. Shabaab fighters and commanders in Galgala are said to be defecting.



Nigeria

Security forces killed four Boko Haram fighters in Maiduguri. President Goodluck Jonathan claimed that the Boko Haram will be defeated “in the middle of this year.”
