Afghanistan

ISAF recovered the body of a missing US soldier in Logar. The Taliban killed six civilians in Parwan and a British soldier in Helmand. Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Logar, Paktia, Kandahar, and Helmand.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed it killed nine French special forces commandos during a raid on the terrorist group’s camp on July 22. AQIM’s press release listed the names of the nine commandos killed and also provided other details about the attack.


Yemen

Six Yemeni troops and three al Qaeda fighters were killed in a clash in Shabwa province. Shia Houthi rebels reportedly captured between 70 and 200 Yemeni soldiers in Amran province.


Iran

Russia said the European Union’s sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program are “unacceptable.” The foreign ministry spokesman condemned the EU’s sanctions. President Ahmedinejad said the US and Israel “have devised a plot, according to which they seek to launch a psychological war on Iran.”

Pakistan

A suicide bomber killed eight people in an attack that targeted a provincial minister in Nowshera. The ISI denounced the Wikileaks’ Afghan memos as false. Interior Minister Malik claimed that terrorists attack Pakistan from Afghanistan.


Somalia

Ten Shabaab fighters and five Puntland security personnel were killed in clashes in the Sanaag mountains. Veterans of al Qaeda’s training camps in Afghanistan now run Shabaab, according to intelligence reports. AFRICOM will increase support to African Union forces in Mogadishu.





Iraq

A double car bomb attack on a checkpoint in Karbala killed 19 Iraqis. A car bomb attack on the headquarters of Al Arabiya in central Baghdad killed six people. Iyad Allawi said he would cede the premiership to another member of his party.


Philippines

Phillipine security forces have captured an Abu Sayyaf Group member after he was trying to depart the southern port city of Zamboanga to Sabah, Malaysia. Jirome Mustakin is wanted for his participation in the abduction and beheading of two Christian Jehovah’s Witnesses on Jolo Island in 2002 when he was just 14.

The European Union approved of new sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program. Iran’s envoy to the IAEA said the country is ready for a new round of talks “without conditions.” Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi said the government may topple if it continues to cling to power.



France
