Insurgents killed seven Iraqis in a rocket attack in Karbala and four more in an IED attack in Sadr City. Five Iraqi soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash near Karbala. Security forces detained five al Qaeda operatives in Baghdad and Hawijah, and a Naqshabandiya group leader in Kirkuk.


Thailand

Insurgents killed a 50-year-old Muslim man and a defense volunteer in Narathiwat. One insurgent was killed and two Muslim civilians were gunned down in Yala province. French hostage held by AQIM possibly killed prior to raid

Oman

An explosion on a Japanese-owned oil tanker is thought to have been caused by a terrorist attack. None of the crew were killed and the ship is not severely damaged. The ship is heading to port for inspection.

Algerian security forces have claimed that Sidi Mohand Ouramdane, a known al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb emir, was responsible for masterminding the suicide car bombing in Ait Aissi that injured eight soldiers and killed one municipal guard. Ouramdane, who is also known as El Khechkhache, has been sentenced in absentia for terrorist activities.

The death toll in yesterday’s bombings in Karbala rose to 50. Iraqi and US forces killed an al Qaeda operative and detained 13 more in Mosul, Tibij, Baghdad, and Tikrit. Parliament has failed to convene to choose a new government.


Somalia

The African Union said an additional 4,000 troops would be sent to Somalia and it is considering loosening the rules of engagement. Hizbul Islam leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys called for Somalis to wage jihad against African Union forces and said talks with Shabaab are going well.
