Iraq

Five civilians were killed in bombings in Karbala; another was killed in a blast in Baghdad. Security forces detained 22 wanted men in Basrah and an al Qaeda weapons facilitator in Fallujah who was involved in Baghdad bombings that killed 147 Iraqis in October 2009.


Afghanistan

Afghan security forces killed seven Taliban fighters and detained two commanders in Helmand. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in an IED attack the South. An ISAF helicopter crashed in Kabul; the Taliban claimed it shot down the helo.


Russia

Two female suicide bombers killed 37 Russians in attacks on two metro stations in Moscow. The attacks were carried out by the Black Widows, the Caucasus Emirate’s female suicide bomber cadre. Doku Umarov, the Caucasus Emirate’s leader, threatened in February to carry out attacks in the heart of Russia.


Iran

Iran sanctions are “at the top of the list” for the G8 meeting. French President Sarkozy visited United States to discuss Afghanistan and Iran with President Obama. Iranian leaders pressed for nuclear disarmament.



Pakistan

Security forces killed 22 Taliban fighters in Arakzai. Ten Pakistanis were wounded by bombings at markets in Karachi and Peshawar. Pakistan will purchase 14 more F-16 fighters from the US.


Iraq

Six Iraqis, including a leader of a small political party, were killed in bombings in Anbar. The League of the Righteous freed a US hostage. Security forces detained 26 wanted men in Mosul and Basrah, and an al Qaeda operative in Baghdad.



Afghanistan

President Obama met with Afghan leaders in a surprise visit to Kabul. The Taliban killed 11 civilians, including five civilians, in bombings in Herat and Helmand. Security forces killed two Taliban fighters in Farah and an undisclosed number in Kapisa, and detained seven more in Helmand and Kandahar.


Yemen

President Saleh said the media has exaggerated the size of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Security forces detained two Europeans who were training with weapons in the mountains in the southern province of Dhamar. Yemeni Marines foiled a hijacking off the coast.



Iran

UN inspectors and Western intelligence specialists suspect Iran is covertly building two new nuclear sites. A key Obama aide claimed the world has united against Iran’s becoming a nuclear power. A leading member of parliament said Iran is spearheading the “fight against US unilateralism.”


Iraqi terror group frees US hostage

Salomi-thumb.jpgThe Iranian-backed League of the Righteous has released Issa Salomi, a US civilian contractor, who was captured in Baghdad in late January. The terror group claimed Salomi was freed as part of a prisoner swap with the US military.

Kirkuk: Arabs, Baathists, insurgents and Turkmens united against the Kurds


Pakistan

A US strike in North Waziristan killed four Taliban fighters. Pakistani airstrikes killed 11 Taliban fighters in Arakzai. The Taliban murdered six truck drivers in Hangu and bombed two schools in Khyber and Mohmand. Fifty Taliban fighters surrendered to a jirga in Bajaur.


Iraq

Insurgents killed three civilians in Baghdad and a policeman in Kirkuk. Yesterday’s bombings in Khalis in Diyala province killed 52 Iraqis. Iraqi forces detained four al Qaeda fighters and a senior leader in Kirkuk.

Afghanistan

Security forces killed three Taliban fighters in Ghazni and several more in Helmand, and detained two Taliban commanders and two facilitators in Helmand, Logar, and Nangarhar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the South and a civilian in Farah. An aid worker was killed in Khost.


Somalia

Shabaab claimed responsibility for killing a senior Somali government official in Mogadishu. Three people were killed in clashes between soldiers and armed protesters opposing the demolition of their houses near Mogadishu’s main airport. Israeli security guards on board a ship repelled an attempted hijacking off Somalia for the second time in a week.
