Pakistan

Mullah Fazlullah ordered 43 political and tribal leaders to stand trial in front of a Taliban court in Swat. Security forces ordered a shoot-on-sight curfew in Swat, where another school was destroyed. Five civilians were killed in a car bombing in Dera Ismail Khan.



Lashkar-e-Taiba

The provincial government of Punjab took control of Jamaat-ud-Dawa’s Markaz-e-Taiba headquarters in Muridke. A chief administrator will “supervise and monitor all activities at the [Jamaat-ud-Dawa’s] headquarters.” Jamaat-ud-Dawa is a front for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba.


Iran

Thirteen Taliban fighters and five civilians were killed after a Taliban force attacked a tribal leader’s home in Badghis province. Two Taliban fighters were killed in Kandahar in a roadside bomb premature detonation. President Karzai said the US killed 16 civilians during a Jan. 24 battle in Laghman province.



Iraq

Security forces detained 22 insurgents and al Qaeda fighters in Diyala province, nine wanted men in Basrah, and six more in Baghdad. Security forces also found 10 missile launch pads in Amarah and a rocket and IED cache in Nasariyah.

Two former Guantanamo detainees appear in an al Qaeda propaganda video. Both detainees have senior positions in al Qaeda in Yemen and have been accused of working with a charity operating in Iran.

An Egyptian al Qaeda operative named Mustafa al Masri was killed in yesterday’s strikes in Waziristan. Eight Taliban fighters and three civilians were killed in clashes in Quetta. Security forces leveled 105 homes and shops in Mohmand. Talibanization is spreading in Quetta.

The US military said 15 Taliban fighters were killed in Laghman province; townspeople claimed 10 civilians were killed. Two civilians were killed in a suicide attack in Paktia province. An ISAF soldier was killed in an IED attack in southern Afghanistan.


Syria

Hamas leader Khalid Meshal met with the leader of the Iraqi Sufi insurgent group Army of the Men of the Naqshabandi Order at his residence in Damascus, Syria. Mishan al Jabouri, a Sunni insurgent leader who broke with al Qaeda in Iraq in 2007, was seen on the TV broadcast while other leaders were masked.

Yemen

Yemeni al Qaeda military commander Abu Osama said more than 300 Yemenis volunteered to fight in in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia during 2008. President Saleh said 94 Yemenis will be released from Guantanamo Bay and sent back to Yemen over the next several months.
