More than 3,000 US troops have deployed to Logar and Wardak provinces. Five Taliban fighters were killed during an operation in Helmand province. Two Coalition soldiers have been killed in southern Afghanistan. Afghan forces have killed one Taliban fighter behind the bombing outside the German embassy in Kabul and detained three more.



Iraq

Four Iraqis were killed and one was wounded in a car bombing in Mosul. Three policemen were wounded in a bombing in Baghdad. Insurgents bombed the home of the Diyala province ground forces commander. Security forces detained 30 wanted men in Basrah.


Israel

Hamas killed one Israeli soldier and wounded three more in a bombing along the Israeli-Gaza Strip border; heavy fighting broke out afterward. Foreign Minister Livni said “Israel needs to respond immediately” to such attacks. Egypt refused entry to the Suez Canal to an Iranian ship laden with weapons and bound for Gaza.



Yemen

Three suspects were detained in a shooting incident outside the US embassy in Sana’a; US and Yemeni accounts of the incident differ. Al Qaeda in Yemen announced the merger with al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia, and formed al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Shabaab has taken control of Baidoa. The African Union has sharply condemned the takeover of the Somali parliament building in Baidoa and surrounding areas by Shabaab. Islamic Courts leader Sheikh Sharif Ahmed may run for president.
