The Oct. 26 assault by US forces into eastern Syria killed al Qaeda’s senior facilitator and his staff. Syria’s foreign minister claimed the raid did not target al Qaeda operatives. Iraq’s spokesman said the government “rejects” the raid but reiterated Syria should stop sheltering al Qaeda operatives.

Iraq’s spokesman said yesterday’s strike inside Syria was aimed at a network facilitating attacks against Iraq. “The attacked area was the scene of activities of terrorist groups operating from Syria against Iraq,” Ali al-Dabbagh said. “Iraq had asked Syria to hand over this group which uses Syria as a base for its terrorist activities.”
