Iraq

Coalition forces detained five al Qaeda operatives during raids nationwide. US troops detained a Special Grousp cell leader and a fighter in Abu T’shir. Iraqi troops detained four “wanted persons” in Nasiriyah. One Iraqi soldier and three al Qaeda fighters were killed during a clash in Salahadin province.




Afghanistan

An Afghan and a British and South African citizen working for DHL were gunned down on the streets of Kabul. Three Turkish engineers in Khost and two Bangladeshi aid workers in Ghazni were kidnapped. Indonesian authorities handed over an Afghan man accused of running a global drug trafficking ring that funded the Taliban.



Pakistan

The government said it is ready for talks with the Taliban in Swat. Pakistani forces killed 12 Taliban fighters in Bajaur. The Taliban beheaded two “spies” in North Waziristan. Police detained four suspects in the Islamabad Marriott Hotel bombing.


The Taliban

The Taliban said an “Awakening” movement would not succeed in Afghanistan as it did in Iraq. A force of 100 Taliban fighters ambushed a larger French unit of 300 soldiers and forced them to retreat. The French soldiers left behind Milan anti-tank missile, which the Taliban captured.

Pakistan: Spy chiefs look at new strategy to fight Taliban


Iran

President Ahmadinejad railed against the proposed Iraq-US security pact, saying the US wanted to “pillage” the country. The Export Development Bank of Iran denied any involvement in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction after the US Treasury Department designation.



Afghanistan

Thousands of Afghans protested the brutal murder of 27 civilians by Taliban fighters in Kandahar. Afghan police captured a senior Taliban leader in Uruzgan. US forces killed three Taliban fighters and detained four more after a clash in Paktika.



Iraq

Iraqi forces arrested 15 al Qaeda fighters in Ninewa, 14 fighters in Diyala, and 13 “wanted men” in Maysan. US troops captured five Special Groups fighters in Bagdad and eight al Qaeda operatives in central Iraq.


Al Qaeda

Osama Bin Laden is reportedly writing a book on al Qaeda and the current fight against the West. The book is a response to “negative propaganda and insufficient information” about the terror group. Bin Laden will write the book in Arabic and have it translated into English.
