Eight of the 11 tribal leaders captured after a reconciliation meeting in Diyala were freed by Iraqi soldiers. Multinational Forces Iraq begins identifying the “rogue” Mahdi Army commanders and continues to pressure Sadr and his Mahdi Army.

The Taliban in Swat and the military agreed to another cease fire after Fazlullah’s spokesman called for “using suicide attacks and waging guerilla war.” The pro-Taliban MMA party said there would be no strikes in Swat if it controlled the federal government. The government dropped leaflets in Malakand urging the people to back the government against the Taliban. A plot to attack the Peshawar airport was foiled after three rockets were fired. Large parts of the NWFP went dark after the Taliban bombed a power pylon.

Ethiopian and Somali forces are battling the al Qaeda linked Shabaab, formerly the Islamic Courts, in Mogadishu for the second day in a row. Protesters are rioting in Mogadishu, demanding the removal of Ethiopian troops. The mayor has warned civilians to flee the fighting.

A Muslim man was beheaded in Pattani province. Two Muslims were killed in Yala province. One woman was killed and 12 civilians wounded in a bombing at shop in Narathiwat province. Three soldiers were wounded in an IED attack in Narathiwat.

Turkish troops killed 20 PKK terrorists during a major operation in eastern Turkey, far from the Iraqi border. A bomb blast in Izmit wounded three anti-PKK demonstrators. The government said both diplomatic and military options to deal with the PKK in northern Iraq are still on the table.

Seven Sunni and three Shia sheikhs were kidnapped after returning from a reconciliation meeting. The interior ministry denied the Muqdadiya police chief and seven of his bodyguards were kidnapped earlier this week. Thirteen insurgents were captured in Doura; another six insurgents were captured southeast of Baghdad. Six al Qaeda operatives were captured in raids nationwide.

The military killed 10 Taliban in helicopter gunship strikes in Swat. Maulana Fazlullah’s fighters are guarding his madrassa just one day after the military attacked the complex in Swat. The leader of the MQM political party called for peace negotiations in Swat and Waziristan. The military dropped pamphlets urging “foreign guests” to leave the tribal areas and calling on the tribal people to join government forces in North Waziristan.

Afghan and NATO forces killed over 80 Taliban fighters during fighting in the Musa Qala Wadi region of Helmand province. Several Taliban fighters were also killed in the Shah Wali Kowt District of Kandahar province. A suicide bomber killed five Afghans soldiers and one civilian in an attack at the gate of the Bermel military base in Paktika province.

Yemeni al Qaeda leader Jamal Badawi, who was behind the USS Cole bombing in October 2000, was released from Yemeni custody. Bawadi surrendered to the police in mid-October.
