Charting the data for US airstrikes in Yemen, 2002 – 2017

Created by Bill Roggio and Bob Barry

Since 2002, the US has been conducting a covert program to target and kill al Qaeda commanders based in Yemen. Reports show that strikes have numbered 172 since 2002, 171 with enemy deaths numbering 830 and civilian deaths numbering 118.

The data is obtained from press reports from the Yemeni press, wire reports (AP, AFP, Reuters, etc.), the US military, as well as reporting from FDD’s Long War Journal. Given AQAP’s control of the areas where some strikes occur, the exact numbers for casualties are difficult to determine. The numbers below are estimates based on press reporting.

During the Obama administration there was a robust attempt to eliminate terrorist leaders. Has this effort continued in the present administration ?
