Security forces arrested five members of the banned group Hizb-ut-Tahrir who are suspected of plotting with some members of the military to overthrow the government and impose sharia law.

The Bangladesh Army said that in December it foiled a plot by 16 Islamist officers to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Hasina. The army statement blamed Bangladeshi expatriates and Hizbut Tahrir as well as “religiously fanatic army officers.”

The Jamaat ul Mujahideen Bangladesh threatened to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and bomb a prison if its associates are not released from jail. Four of the six top leaders of the MB were captured in 2005 and executed in 2007.

A suicide bomber killed one person in an attack in Doulatpur at the home of a member of parliament. Afaz Uddin, the MP from the Awami League party, escaped the attack unhurt; two people are reported to be in critical condition.

Police arrested two Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives in Tongi on the outskirts of the capital of Dhaka. Wazed Khan, a Pakistani national who is an explosive expert for a cell, and a Bangladeshi named Abu Bakar Siddique were captured on Oct. 9; explosives were also found during the raid.

Police arrested three men, including a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba leader, during a raid in Dhaka. The commander, Khurram, a Pakistani citizen who is also known as Muhammad Selim, has been identified by other captured LeT operatives as the local leader of LeT.
