Dagestani jihadist swears allegiance to Islamic State, invoking backlash

After a request from the antiterrorism squad in Mumbai, the government ordered that 32 websites be blocked for carrying Islamic State content that is “anti-India.” The Army estimated that some 160 terrorists are planning to infiltrate into Jammu & Kashmir.

Senior al Qaeda leader returns to Twitter, praises ‘martyrs’
The al Qaeda leader known as Sanafi al Nasr praised al Qaeda’s “martyrs” on Twitter. Among them is Adnan al Shukrijumah, an al Qaeda operative charged with attacking the West. Nasr’s tweets also shed additional light on the identity of another terrorist reportedly killed earlier this month.

Somali government reports Shabaab’s intel chief killed in US airstrike
Somalia’s National Security Agency said that the US killed the leader of the Amniyat. The US military later confirmed the report.

The US and partner nations carried out eight airstrikes in Iraq and seven in Syria against the Islamic State. US and Somali officials confirmed that a US airstrike yesterday in Somalia killed Abdishakur a.k.a. Tahliil, the head of Shabaab’s Amniyat, or secret service, along with another militant. The Treasury Department levied sanctions on nine individuals and entities in Iran. The US military is planning to station 150 tanks and armored vehicles in Europe, possibly in Poland, Romania, or the Baltic states, for the training of US forces.

The Foreign Ministry rejected claims in a November UN report that said arms for the Islamic State and the Al Nusrah Front are being smuggled primarily through Turkey. Increasing numbers of Turkish Jews are leaving the country due to security concerns. Mehmet Ali Ağca, who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, was deported by Italy after entering the country illegally to visit the pope’s tomb.

The Supreme Court decided in closed session yesterday to designate the Islamic State and the Al Nusrah Front as terrorist groups and ban them from Russia. The decision follows the defection of several Dagestani factions of the Caucasus Emirate to the Islamic State. Foreign Minister Lavrov warned that recent US sanctions against Russia will negatively affect bilateral cooperation on Iran’s nuclear program, the war in Syria, and other international issues.

The US launched an airstrike in southern Somalia targeting a senior Shabaab leader. The State Department criticized a draft resolution on statehood that the Palestinians are planning to submit to the UN. Although the US’ combat mission in Afghan is formally over, Secretary of Defense Hagel has said that the US military will provide “limited combat enabler support” to Afghan forces starting in January.

The Cameroonian operation against the Boko Haram fighters is still underway. On Dec. 26, the military reportedly killed 100 Boko Haram fighters and arrested 200 more after the terrorists attacked and burned villages in the far north and killed at least 23 civilians.
