Afghanistan

Afghan officials said that 71 Taliban fighters and five policemen were killed during fighting throughout the country. A separate report claimed that 10 policemen were killed in Helmand, Herat, and Kunduz.


Iraq

Insurgents killed 11 Iraqis in two separate bombings in Baghdad province. Security forces detained four al Qaeda in Iraq fighters in Wasit province.


Saudi Arabia

A court sentenced 11 men to prison terms ranging from two to 15 years for membership in an al Qaeda-linked cell. The men had allegedly planned to attack US military forces in Kuwait as well as state-owned Aramco oil facilities.


AQAP regroups in Abyan province

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula reportedly established training camps in the mountains of the Al Mahfad area in the southern Yemeni province of Abyan.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has established a new base in the Al Mahfad area in Abyan province. Yemen’s foreign minister admitted that the US is conducting drone strikes against AQAP.


Syria

Gunmen attacked a pro-Assad TV station near Damascus, destroying the station and killing seven employees. President Assad said the country was at war and no effort should be spared to achieve victory. The UN said violence had worsened since the attempted peace plan in April.


China

Somalia

Eight people were killed after Shabaab forces attacked Somali and Kenyan army bases in Badhadhe. Shabaab called the telecom firm Hoormud “an oppressive tool of the Jews and US” for helping Kenyan forces track down Shabaab members. Prime Minister Ali said Shabaab will be driven “out of their last stronghold” by the end of August.


Egypt

An Egyptian court struck down a decree giving the military authority to detain civilians. The ruling rolls back some of the powers the military had accumulated over the previous year.


Kenya

Police stated that Samantha Lewthwaite, a.k.a. Natalie Faye Webb, is not being investigated for links to the June 24 grenade attack at a Mombasa beer garden that killed three people. One suspect is in custody. Lewthwaite, the widow of 7/7 Tube bomber Germaine Lindsay, is wanted on bombmaking charges and remains at large.


Nigeria

Seventeen “extremists” and one policemen were killed during fighting at police stations and a prison in Kano yesterday. Three Boko Haram fighters were also detained as police repelled the attacks.



Mali

Two protesters were killed by Tuareg rebels from the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad in Gao. Ansar Dine, an al Qaeda-linked group, released a video claiming its fighters defended the protesters from the MNLA attack.


Senegal

Senegalese intelligence said that “specific threats of attacks” in the country from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb have emerged as Senegal plans to deploy troops to Mali. “It now regards Senegal as a hostile country.”


United Kingdom

The head of M15, Britain’s intelligence agency, said the Arab Spring has created a more permissive environment for al Qaeda in some countries. He said the threat of British jihadis returning to the UK from foreign terror training camps is a growing concern. India

United States

The defense rested in the case of Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, a 22-year-old Saudi student accused of preparing to bomb US targets, including the home of former President George W. Bush. The suspect sought to “create an Islamic group under the banner” of al Qaeda, according to an affidavit in the case.

Fierce fighting broke out around elite Republican Guard posts in the capital of Damascus. The rebel Free Syrian Army captured a military base in the northern town of Daret Ezzah. The UN said Syria is too dangerous for peacekeeping monitors to resume their mission.
