Iraq

Insurgents killed three policemen in Ninewa, two civilians near Hillah, and another in Mosul. Security forces detained seven al Qaeda fighters in Taji and a leader in Anbar, four wanted men in Tal Afar, three terrorists in Basrah, and a Promised Day Brigade leader and two fighters in Baghdad.


Nigeria

Investigators believe the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram is responsible for the targeted killings of three policemen in the north. Two Boko Haram members were detained for downloading propaganda from the group’s slain leader.



Afghanistan

ISAF and Afghan forces killed more than 90 Taliban fighters during long-term operations in Kabul and Laghman, and recently detained several Taliban fighters in Kunduz, Khost, Paktia, and Paktika. Pakistan

The son of General Tariq Majid, the chairman of the Army’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, was kidnapped in Lahore. One person was killed in a bombing in Mansehra. The Taliban bombed three tankers in Quetta, Kalat, and Mastung, and a school in Khyber. The Ittehad Mujahideen Khurasan announced an amnesty for “US spies.”


Yemen

Osama bin Laden’s former bodyguard warned that al Qaeda is gaining strength in southern Yemen and said outside intervention would be needed to help the government. The government and Houthi rebels agreed to begin negotiations during a meeting in Qatar.


India

Mustafa Abu Yazid, al Qaeda’s former leader in Afghanistan and top financial official, claimed al Qaeda carried out a bombing at a German bakery in Pune. Yazid, who was killed in a Predator strike in Pakistan in May, created a videotape claiming credit for the attack.

Iraq

Insurgents killed seven Awakening fighters in Miqdadiyah. Security forces killed an al Qaeda fighter and detained 38, including an emir, in Diyala, Al Kut, Basrah, Baghdad, and Samarra.






Canada

Police arrested three Muslim men involved in a plot to assemble bombs as well as support terrorists fighting in Afghanistan. “This group posed a real and serious threat to the citizens of the national capital region and Canada’s national security,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Superintendent said.
