Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula took credit for the attempted bombing of a US airplane on Christmas Day and vowed to conduct further attacks. “[W]e have come to slaughter you (and) will strike you with no previous (warning), our vengeance is near,” said a statement released by the group on the Internet.


Somalia

Pirates released a Chinese ship hijacked in mid-October and seized a Yemeni cargo vessel with a crew of 16. Gunmen killed an officer working for an aid organization in the town of Bula-Hawo.


Iran

Police killed 10 civilians during protests on Ashura. Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri, the deputy commander of Iran’s armed forces, called the protests disgraceful. Israel said Iran is close to producing nuclear weapons.

Unidentified gunmen have killed three Saudi tourists and wounded three others in Niger. The three wounded tourists were taken to a hospital in Niamey. Iraq

Security forces killed an Islamic State of Iraq leader and captured another in Tal Afar, and detained 14 al Qaeda in Iraq operatives in northern Iraq and three Special Groups fighters in Al Kut. Iraq’s Youth Minister escaped an assassination attempt in a bombing in Toz Kharmeto. “Gunmen” killed two cement factory workers in Mosul.


Afghanistan

Eleven Taliban fighters and two policemen were killed during clashes in Badghis province, where Afghan and Coalition forces have launched an operation. Afghan and Coalition forces captured an undisclosed number of Taliban and Haqqani network commanders and fighters during operations in Kandahar, Helmand, Wardak, and Khost.





Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of two Italian nationals in eastern Mauritania. A suicide bomber killed 15 Shia mourners and wounded 100 more in an attack on a procession in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-held Kashmir. Two policemen were among those killed. This was the third suicide attack in Pakistan-held Kashmir this year.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said it would avenge the deaths of those killed in the Dec. 17 and Dec. airstrikes that reportedly killed more than 64 al Qaeda fighters. “We will not let Muslim women and children’s blood be spilled without taking revenge,” the group said in a statement released in the Internet.
