Afghanistan

Last week’s airstrike in Herat that was thought to have killed a senior insurgent commander inadvertently killed 13 civilians. Three Coalition soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Uruzgan province. The US said that detainees held at the Bagram prison cannot use US courts to challenge their detention.


Iraq

Iraqi security forces detained 18 insurgents in a series of operations in Mosul. Police detained 19 insurgents and an al Qaeda leader in Diyala, and 11 wanted men in Thi Qhar province. A US soldier was killed during a combat patrol outside of Baghdad.


Lebanon

Israeli troops launched an artillery salvo into south Lebanon after a Kaytusha rocket was launched into northern Israel. Three Israeli civilians were wounded in the attack. Hezbollah has denied firing the rocket. The Lebanese Army has sent reinforcements to the region.


The Taliban

The Swat Taliban and the Pakistani government have agreed to a “permanent ceasefire,” according to the commissioner of Malakand. Mullah Fazlullah, the Swat Taliban leader and the deputy leader of the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, is expected to make an announcement on his illegal radio channel.



Pakistan

A suicide attack on a Shia funeral procession killed 32 civilians. A bombing in Lakki Marwat killed four civilans. Baitullah Mehsud, Mullah Nazir, and Hafiz Gul Bahadar have formed and alliance to prevent outside enemies from dividing the Taliban. Security forces killed four Taliban fighters in Bajaur


United States

A grand jury indicted Ahmadullah Sais Niazi, an Afghan nation who is accused of trying to obtain a US passport under false pretenses and for links to al Qaeda, Hezb-i-Islami and the Taliban.Niazi reportedly met with Dr. Amin al Haq, the commander of Osama bin Laden’s security detail known as the Black Guard.


Iraq

Prime Minister Maliki™s State of Law list won more than one-quarter of the all 490 in the country™s local council seats in the provincial elections. The Swat Taliban want the government to release its followers, drop all criminal charges, and withdraw the military. Jamaat-e-Islami demanded the implementation of sharia throughout all of Pakistan.Security forces killed 14 Taliban fighters in Bajaur. Punjab province ordered the closure of two facilities in Attack used by NATO supply convoys.

Al Qaeda Commander in Saudi Custody May Still Pose Threat From Prison



Niger

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb posted photographs of four of the six Western hostages currently being held by the terror group. Shown were the four vacationers kidnapped in Mali; the two Canadian diplomats kidnapped in Niger have not been shown.


Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan’s parliament voted 78-1 to cancel the lease agreement with the US on the Manas air base. The base is used to move supplies and men into Afghanistan. The US will have 180 days to vacate the base if President Bakiyev signs the bill.


Afghanistan

Police arrested a suicide bomber in Kabul. Police and Coalition forces detained two members of an IED cell in Khost. The Republic of Georgia will send 100 soldiers to Afghanistan.



Iraq

An Iraqi soldier killed three other soldiers then committed suicide. A suicide car bomber killed one policeman in Mosul. Six civilians were wounded in IED attacks in Baghdad and Fallujah. Security forces detained three drug dealers in Dhi Qhar and a wanted man in Wasit.


Pakistan

Security forces killed 10 Taliban fighters in Bajaur. The Taliban bombed two schools in Swat and blew up the press club in South Waziristan. The Taliban will temporarily halt attacks in Bannu. The government said Masood Azhar and Dawood Ibrahim are not in Pakistan.
