[UPDATE 2] A missile strike killed 12 Taliban in Khushali Tari Khel, North Waziristan as negotiations for a new North Waziristan Accord are underway. Baitullah Mehsud appointed Faqir Muhammad the chief negotiator for the Pakistani Taliban. The government admits it is fighting an insurgency in the tribal areas. Five members of Jundallah and two policemen were killed in a shootout in Karachi. Fifty Taliban were reported killed during the three-day battle in Darra Adam Khel. The military regained control of a fort in Swat.

Clashes in Mogadishu resulted in 17 Somali and 2 Ethiopian solders killed. The Ethiopian Army withdrew its 1,000-man force from a military base east of Beletwein in Hiran province. Heavy fighting between Somali troops and Shabaab terrorists has been reported in Hiran.

A policeman was beheaded in Swat. The seven “gunmen” who held children hostage in a school in Bannu have been set free.

A group of seven “militants” took more than 250 children hostage at a school while attempting to escape from police forces in Bannu. The men later turned the children over and surrendered to a tribal jirga. The government denied al Qaeda operative Rashid Rauf is secretly in custody. The military is repairing the Kohat Tunnel and said it recovered the supply trucks seized by the Taliban.

Leaders of the Sadrist movement are pressing Muqtada to end the cease-fire in February. Iraqi security forces arrested 40 insurgents and defused 30 IEDs in Baghdad. Coalition forces detained 18 al Qaeda opertives during raids in central Iraq and a Special Groups operative in Baghdad. Five US soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Mosul; two police were also killed and two wounded in the city.

Heavy fighting between Ethiopian and Shabaab forces in Mogadishu resulted in 14 killed and 21 wounded. Two Dutch doctors, a journalist, and their driver were killed in an IED attack near Kismayo. Three African Union peacekeepers were wounded in an IED attack in Mogadishu. The spokesman for the pro-Islamic Courts Hawiye Council was released from prison along with members of the council.
