The US military is building additional airfields in southern and eastern Afghanistan to base Reaper and Predator aircraft that provide surveillance and striking power for Coalition and Afghan forces. A New York Times reporter, his driver, and his interpreter were kidnapped by forces loyal to Siraj Haqqani.

Afghan forces killed one Taliban fighter and captured six during raids in Herat, Ghazni, and Khost. Australia has no plans to increase forces and Canada said it is committed to withdrawing by 2011.
An airstrike in Badghis province killed 15 Taliban fighters and seven civilians. The attack occurred after Taliban fighters ambushed a joint Afghan and ISAF convoy in the district of Ghormach, a Pashtun pocket in the north. General Petraeus said the Afghan tribes can help with securing the country.
