US readying south Afghan surge against Taliban




Twenty Afghan bodyguards of Musa Qala district leader Mullah Abdul Salaam were killed in a disputed incident. The spokesman for Helmand province claimed the Taliban conducted an assault at Salaam's home, while the Afghan Army said the incident was the result of a dispute between the bodyguards. The Taliban said two of its fighters were killed in the ambush.




Coalition forces killed six Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan. Afghan forces killed an IED cell member and destroyed three bomb-making compounds in Kandahar province. A Coalition soldier was killed in southern Afghanistan.




US plans alternate supply routes to Afghanistan




Coalition forces detained eight Haqqani network fighters in Paktia province. A policeman in Herat was arrested for helping the Taliban; 12 others defected. Bulgaria may increase the number of troops in country; 460 Bulgarian soldiers are currently stationed in Afghanistan. China offered Afghanistan $11 million in additional aid.

Pakistan shuts down NATO supply line through the Khyber Pass

The military launches an operation in the Jamrud region outside of Peshawar, where the Taliban has taken control. This is the third time the route has been closed since September.


The Taliban took credit for yesterday's suicide attack in Khost province that killed 14 school children. Two Afghans were killed in a suicide attack in Parwan province and three more were killed in a bombing in Spin Boldak in Kandahar province. Coalition and Afghan forces killed two Taliban fighters in Ghazni province.

Fourteen children and two policemen were killed and 58 others were wounded in a suicide attack in Khost province. Two Canadian soldiers were killed in an IED attack in the Panjwai district in Kandahar province. Afghan and ISAF forces captured a senior Taliban commander in Logar province.
