A Saudi newspaper reported that some 1,200 Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon entered Syria from over the past few days. Tensions are rising in Lebanon between pro- and anti-Assad factions. Several thousand women have begun fighting in the Syrian conflict, on both sides. Activists said government airstrikes killed 16 people in a Kurdish village and damaged a historic mosque; the state news agency said a suicide car bomb injured three journalists in Aleppo.

A rights group claimed that gas bombs dropped from aircraft killed two women and two children in Aleppo. The head of Ansar al Sharia in Syria, which is affiliated with the Al Nusrah Front, said the rebel groups fighting in Douma, including the Free Syrian Army, all seek the creation of an Islamic state. He alleged that new fighting groups with Islamist names in Ghouta and Daraa are controlled by the US. Government troops clashed with the Al Nusrah Front in Qamishli, very close to the Turkish border. Government forces also battled rebels around Qusair near the Lebanese border and Daraa near the Jordanian border. UK scientists claim to have found traces of chemical weapon use in Syria.

The Assad regime called on the UN to designate the Al Nusrah Front as a terrorist organization, following the group’s announcement of its affiliation with al Qaeda. At least 57 people were killed in Deraa province after government forces assaulted two towns linked to defections from the Syrian army. Activists say a rebel battalion has been torturing civilians in the al-Ashrafiya neighborhood of Aleppo.

A Syrian businessman issued a bounty for journalists from two news organizations he accused of anti-regime bias. President Assad warned that a rebel victory in Syria will destabilize the region for years to come. A British study estimates that some 600 people from 14 European countries have fought in Syria since 2011.

Rebel forces captured the Um al-Mayathen military post near the main border crossing into Jordan after heavy fighting. Jordan has doubled the size of its border security force in the last two days, saying it “can’t sit idle and watch al-Qaeda and other militants seizing control of its common border with Syria.” The Assad regime is said to be employing foreign fighters from Iraq, Lebanon, Iran, and Pakistan to defend Shiite sites in Syria; they fight with the Abu al Fadl al-Abbas brigade. The UN warned that it will soon run out of resources to minister to Syrian refugees.
