A US citizen of Algerian descent has been arrested by authorities in Barcelona’s Esplugues de Llobregat district for funding Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Mohamed Omar Debhi was arrested for suspicion of sending over $82,000 dollars to the terror group responsible for attacks and kidnappings throughout the Maghreb.

Spanish authorities arrested a Moroccan national for links to al Qaeda. Faical Errai ran a jihadist website, raised funds, and recruited fighters for terror groups in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Chechnya. Spanish authorities have warned that Mokhtar Belmokhtar, an al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb cell, is hiring mercenaries to kidnap more Westerners in the Sahara/Sahel.

Spain accepted its first detainee from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. The detainee, who was not named, is a Palestinian. He will be freed from custody but cannot leave the country. Spain plans to accept five Guantanamo Bay detainees.

A court said the Pakistani Taliban ordered a cell of men based in Pakistan and India to conduct suicide attacks in Barcelona’s subway system. Eleven members of the cell were detained in January 2008 after one of the cell members turned himself in to authorities.

Authorities are blaming ETA, the Basque separatists in Burgos, northern Spain, for a car bomb explosion that tore through a 14-story paramilitary Civil Guard barracks, injuring 46 people. A car bomb explosion in Bilbao that killed a police officer in June was also blamed on the separatists.

The National Court convicted two Moroccans, an Algerian, and a Spaniard for aiding in the March 2004 Madrid train bombings that killed 191 people. The maximum sentence imposed was nine years in prison. Ten other suspects who were accused of helping four bombers flee the police were acquitted.

Judge Baltasar Garzon of Spain is inquiring with the US, Britain, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Spain on the whereabouts of Mustafa Setmarian Nasar (AKA Abu Musab al Suri), an al Qaeda strategist and writer who was detained by Pakistan in 2005. Nasar is believed to be involved in the 2004 Madrid train bombings.

Osama bin Laden’s son, Omar, has lost his bid for asylum in Spain. A government official said Omar did not “meet the conditions necessary for entering Spain.” The UN Refugee Agency recommended against giving Omar asylum.

Omar bin Laden, the son of Osama, has requested asylum at Madrid’s airport during a layover on a flight from Cairo to Casablanca. Spain has 72 hours to reply to the request after it is submitted. Omar has been denied asylum in Britain despite being married to a British woman.
