Turkey’s new precision weapons stoke regional tensions

Turkey’s unveiling of the Tayfun Block-4 missile and Gazap and Hayalet bunker-buster bombs at IDEF 2025 marks a major leap in its offensive capabilities, alarming Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, all within range of these systems. While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan frames the advances as a march toward defense self-reliance, regional rivals view them as tools for expanding Ankara’s geopolitical reach in the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

A court sentenced Hossam Taleb Yaacoub, 24, a Swedish-Lebanese citizen, to four years in prison for helping Hezbollah plot attacks against Israelis. Because of his age and lack of prior convictions, he received less than the maximum sentence of 10 years.

A Cypriot court convicted Hossam Taleb Yaacoub, a Swedish-Lebanese citizen, for his part in the 2012 bombing in Burgas, Bulgaria. The court said “Hezbollah acts as a criminal organization.” Yaacoub had admitted to spying for Hezbollah for the Burgas attack and other operations.

A Lebanese Swede who is suspected of plotting attacks against Israeli interests was detained pending further investigation. Israel believes the suspect’s modus operandi is similar to that of the recent suicide bombing in Bulgaria that has been linked to Hezbollah and Iran.

A Swedish man of Lebanese origin was arrested last week in Limossal. He had been taking photographs of Israeli interests, and possessed notes about Israeli aircraft. He is suspected of planning a terrorist attack against Israeli interests in Cyprus.
