The attack came five days after an Ansar Jerusalem suicide car bombing in Mansoura killed more than a dozen people. Authorities also reportedly defused a bomb near a school in el Arish today.
Thus far, no jihadist group has confirmed or denied Egyptian army claims that key jihadists have been killed in recent weeks.
The new release is the first from the group since early October when it claimed responsibility for an RPG attack on a satellite station in the Cairo suburb of Maadi.
The group has previously taken responsibility for RPG attacks on ships in the Suez Canal as well as shooting attacks on “criminals” and “apostates.”
A unit within the al Furqan Brigades claimed responsibility for recent shooting attacks on Egyptians, including at least one security official. The al Furqan Brigades has previously claimed attacks on ships traveling through the Suez Canal.
A group calling itself the al Furqan Brigades claimed responsibility for two attacks on ships passing through the Suez Canal. In its latest statement, the group claimed it will continue to target ships in the canal.
