Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of five French nationals and two Africans in Niger. It is reported that Abu Zeid, a southern emir of AQIM, is likely behind the abductions. The kidnappings are suspected of being an inside job.


Algeria

Two Algerian police were killed by a roadside bomb planted by suspected al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters in the town of Bordj Menaiel. Three civilians were also injured in the attack. A police officer was killed while trying to defuse a bomb planted by Islamists in Boumerdes.


Mauritania

The Mauritanian army has captured six suspected members of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb during an offensive operation in northern Mali. The army used aircraft to bomb a convey of vehicles said to be carrying members of AQIM. Mauritania is accused of killing two civilians and wounding four others in the airstrike.


Philippines

Suspected Abu Sayyaf Group gunmen abducted a Chinese-Filipino junk shop owner in Zamboanga City. Vinton So’s wife said the kidnappers told her it was “purely business.” A ransom demand has not yet been received. Abu Sayyaf has kidnapped three wealthy businessmen in the city this year; all were freed after a ransom was paid.


Nigeria

Police arrested two suspected Boko Haram members in Jos. The suspectes were waiting in a crowd for the arrival of the presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. One of the men admitted to being a member of a guerrilla group.

One hundred French military anti-terror specialists have landed in Niger to aid authorities in freeing five French nationals abducted last Thursday. A roadside bomb planted by insurgents injured 3 Thai soldiers after leaving their outpost in Narathiwat’s Bacho district.


Niger

The French nuclear firm Areva and construction company Vinci are pulling their foreign staff from northern Niger in response to the suspected Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb kidnappings. France believes the five hostages have been moved from Niger to Mali.

Four insurgents killed a father and son in front of their home at a local village checkpoint in Narathiwat province. Insurgents killed a security guard working at the front office of the Chairat Parawood Company in Yala™s Raman district. A couple working at a university in Pattani was shot and wounded by an insurgent.


Philippines

Abu Sayyaf Group fighters killed three soldiers in the town of Tipo-Tipo, Basilan. Ten Abu Sayyaf fighters ambushed an army patrol, which was unable to pursue the fighters into territory controlled by the MILF. Formal peace talks between the government and MILF are set to resume in November.


Mauritania

A suspected Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb member has been arrested in eastern Nouakchott. The unidentified man is linked to the attack and killing of soldiers in 2007 and 2008 that were blamed on AQIM. The arrests come a week after 35 convicted Islamists were pardoned of their prison sentences by authorities on Eid.


Niger

Five French nationals and two African nationals working for the nuclear company Areva and a subcontracter of the French construction company Vinci have been kidnapped from their companies staff compound in the northern town of Arlit. Thailand

An insurgent bomb attack wounded three police officers and one soldier in Yala’s Raman district. Suspected insurgents wounded three people in a drive-by in Narathiwat’s Rueso district. Four locals were wounded in a bomb explosion in a market in Pattani’s Khok Pho district.


Philippines

National police have killed an Abu Sayyaf Group commander and his two aides in a 15-minute gun battle at a house in Maimbung, Sulu province. The Abu Sayyaf commander, Gafur Jumdail, is the younger brother of the group’s top leader, Umbra Jumdail. Other Abu Sayyaf members may have been wounded in the raid.


Bahrain

Bahraini authorities accused 23 Shia activists who are protesting the Sunni-dominated government of being members of a “sophisticated terrorist network.” The suspects are said to have been planning to overthrow the government, conduct violent acts, and use a propaganda campaign against the current regime.


Mauritania

Mauritanian authorities have captured a drug trafficker with links to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Ahmed Ould Baba Ahmed was arrested in Rosso, close the Senegalese border, and is thought to have a connection to the Lemzarrab operation last February in which authorities clashed with drug traffickers on the Mali border.


Thailand

A shootout between insurgents and Thai soldiers resulted in the deaths of one soldier and one insurgent in Yala™s Muang district. Two soldiers were also wounded in a raid to apprehend an insurgent bombmaker, Mohammad Sarai. A Muslim village chief was killed in Pattani province.

Three emirs of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb have surrendered to Algerian security forces. Oukad Atiya, alias Abu Djendel, was the emir who led the Katibat al-Farouk phalanx that operates from Medea to Bouira, Tizi Ouzou, and Boumerdes. The emirs are responsible for numerous assassinations, attacks, and kidnappings.
