Former intelligence chief Prince Turki al-Faisal called Obama’s Syrian policies “lamentable.” US Secretary of State Kerry told Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal that the US valued the kingdom’s leadership and said it would have more influence if it accepted the seat on the UN Security Council. Saudi Arabia’s UN envoy criticized Israel and the UN on the Palestinian situation.

The European Union offered to open a new chapter on negotiations for Turkey’s accession to the organization.

At least one civilian was killed in an overnight shooting attack in el Arish. Israeli and Palestinian negotiators held another round of peace talks with a focus on water-related issues. A number of Druze citizens of Israel have reportedly traveled to Syria to fight on behalf of the Assad regime. Defense Minister Ya’alon said that despite recent unrest, “there are no signs of a popular uprising or a third intifada.”

The pastor of the Mombasa church, which is situated very close to the controversial Masjid Musa, had received death threats. Rioting over the killing of a Mombasa imam on Oct. 4 by unknown assailants led to the burning of a Salvation Army worship center in Majengo on Oct. 11.

A classified German intelligence report said a “German camp” has been established in Syria for German-speaking jihadists and that German Islamists in Syria have set up media centers to foster recruitment. Eight German jihadists are thought to have died in Syria. The number of European jihadists in Syria has risen to about 1,000, much higher than the 250 estimated in late 2012.

Authorities are looking for two Norwegian girls of Somali origin, aged 16 and 19, who are believed to have traveled to Syria to join jihadists there. The older girl is said to have become recently radicalized. The Norwegian PST estimates that some 30 to 40 Norwegians have traveled to Syria to fight; a regional security source said increasingly organized Islamic recruiting networks are bringing many Western fighters into Syria.
