US Army veteran Eric Harroun was arrested and charged with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction, an RPG, for the Al Nusrah Front, al Qaeda’s Syrian affilate. A judge sentenced Mohamed Ibrahim Ahmed, an Eritrean, to nine years in prison followed by deportation, for supporting Shabaab. The US flew two stealth bombers over South Korea in a show of deterrent force to North Korea.

Afghanistan
Security forces killed a Taliban district chief and six fighters in Faryab, 11 fighters in Badakhshan, and six more in Herat. Two policemen were also killed in Badakhshan. Three teachers were gunned down in Balkh. A concert in Ghazni was canceled after provincial officials declared that music is haram.

Syria
Rebel forces have encircled much of Damascus and are intensifying their attacks. Mortar rounds hit the architecture department at Damascus University, killing at least 15 civilians in what state media are calling a terrorist attack. Government forces are retaliating against rebel strongholds in the suburbs, resulting in civilian casualties. Fighters attacked a bus carrying Public Telecommunications workers, killing two civilians. Three fighters from the Palestinian Liberation army, including a lieutenant, were killed by rebels in A’dra.

Palestinian Territories
A Hamas member died in Gaza when a smuggling tunnel collapsed. A senior Hamas official said some Palestinians are spreading false information about Hamas in attempt to damage the group’s relations with Egypt. A Palestinian journalist was sentenced to one year in prison for “insulting” PA President Abbas. An Islamic Jihad terrorist, who was serving eight years in jail, was released by Israel to Gaza.

Israel
Israel reopened its border crossings with Gaza, which it had closed after last week’s rocket fire from Gaza. Israeli authorities arrested over 30 members of Fatah’s Tanzim who were wanted for involvement in terror attacks. Israel established a field hospital near the border with Syria to treat those wounded in the Syrian civil war.

The African Union Mission in Somalia announced that the nearly 1,000 troops being deployed by Sierra Leone will be sent to bases in Kismayo, Baidoa, and Beledweyn. The cities have served as major Shabaab strongholds in the past.

The Joint Task Force raided a “militant” compound in Kano and uncovered a massive weapons cache; the “chief armorer” was killed and another militant was captured. A British national who was kidnapped in Lagos last week has been freed.

Tunisia
The government is investigating the jihadist recruiting networks that send young Tunisians to fight in Syria. Prime Minister Larayedh said the government has already stopped a number of young Tunisians from leaving for “uncalculated adventures.” He criticized Salafist views, and Ansar al Sharia responded with threats. Authorities are also investigating Abou Zeid Ettounsi, a Tunisian Islamist accused of using a TV appearance to call for jihad in Syria.

Ansar al Sharia has alleged that American drones are flying overhead inside Tunisian territory. We have no independent information confirming the use of drones in Tunisia. The group is using the allegation as part of its propaganda campaign.

Mali
French President Hollande said French troops would begin pulling out of Mali in late April and then draw down from about 2,000 in July to 1,000 at the end of the year. French troops are expected to be part of a proposed UN peacekeeping force later this year. A presidential election is scheduled for July 7, with legislative elections two weeks later.

Omar al Chechen has formed Jaish al-Muhajireen wa Ansar, or Army of the Emigrants and Helpers, and merged his Muhajireen Brigade with several Syrian jihadist groups.

Security forces killed three Taliban fighters as they attacked an outpost in Bajaur. Two security personnel were killed in a bombing in Bajaur. Pakistani security officials claimed that 9,000, including more than 3,000 security personnel, people have been killed in terrorist attacks in the past five years.

Afghan and Coalition forces claimed they killed 23 Taliban fighters in Logar, but reports from the province indicate that five civilians, including four children, were killed. Afghan officials said that another 29 Taliban fighters were killed during raids throughout the country.
