Philippines

Government troops attacked an encampment of the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group on Basilan island. In the ensuing clash, 16 militants and 20 troops were killed.


Thailand

A group of 20 militants ambushed an army patrol in Pattani province, killing four soldiers and wounding two more. On July 18, a group of 25 militants in Narathiwat province attacked homes and a military outpost, killing two civilians and one soldier; two civilians and four soldiers were wounded in the attacks.

Pakistan – KP governor orders arrest of female aid worker’s killers




Afghanistan

Special operations forces killed two insurgents while targeting an al Qaeda-linked leader in Ghazni. Security forces killed 18 Taliban fighters in Paktika. The Taliban condemned the destruction of ISAF bases.

Fifteen government officials in Baqubah quit after receiving death threats from al Qaeda in Iraq. Security forces detained 19 wanted men in Kirkuk.

In Aleppo, government and rebel forces prepared for the “mother of all battles” as the US, UK, and France warned of a potential massacre. The former head of the UN monitoring mission said it is just a matter of time before President Assad’s regime falls.

Nervous Iraq keeps its eye on neighbouring Syria


Somalia

Shabaab claimed it killed seven Kenyan troops in an ambush in Kulbiyow, and killed four soldiers in an IED attack in Baidoa. A bomb was detonated at a police checkpoint outside of Mogadishu’s Police Academy, where Somali delegates are writing a new constitution.


Nigeria

Boko Haram fighters killed four people, including two policemen, during an attack on a police station in Gubio. the police station and a local government office were burned down during the attack.


Russia

Russian security forces stormed a house in Dagestan where Islamic militants were hiding with women and children, killing at least seven suspected militants. A woman who came out of the house feigning surrender detonated an explosive belt, killing only herself. Security forces also killed two militants in Kabardino-Balkaria.


United States

The head of the National Security Agency and the US Cyber Command said computer attacks on US infrastructure increased 17 fold between 2009 and 2011. The Taliban killed nine people in a bombing at a market in Bajaur. Three people were killed in a bombing at a Lashkar-e-Islam headquarters in Khyber. Pakistan temporarily shut down NATO’s supply route to Afghanistan.


Afghanistan

Seven Taliban fighters, a police commander and two policemen, four security guards, and a child were killed during clashes. The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in the south. Security forces detained two Haqqani Network commanders, a Taliban weapons smuggler, and several insurgents.
