Sweden

Uzbek state television said Sweden is sheltering Obidkhon Nazarov, a radical cleric who fled the country in the 1990s. Nazarov is accused of forming jihadist groups and orchestrating terror attacks in Uzbekistan. He denied any links to radical Islam.


Tunisia

Eleven people arrested in 2009 have been convicted of terrorist offenses and sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to twelve years. The men were jailed for “having ties with a terrorist group, recruiting persons and providing it with money.”





Pakistan

The Punjabi Taliban killed more than 70 worshippers at two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore. The military killed 40 Taliban fighters in Arakzai. The US killed 11 terrorists in an airstrike in South Waziristan. A top court declared nuclear scientist AQ Khan a free man.





Iraq

Security forces detained four wanted men in Amarah and three more in Al Kut, and an al Qaeda in Iraq operative linked to a senior leader in Mosul. The driver of an elected parliamentarian who was assassinated earlier this week died of wounds suffered in the attack.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Othman Ahmed al Ghamdi, a former Guantanamo detainee, has been appointed as a senior operations commander of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. AQAP confirmed that low-level commanders Abdullah al Muhdar, Mohammed Amir al Awlaki, and Mohammed Saleh al Kazimi, were killed in airstrikes over the past six months.




Somalia

Shabaab took control of several villages in the Galgudud region in central Somalia. Shabaab rejected Hizbul Islam’s call to unite. The state minister for defense and two other ministers dodged an IED attack in Mogadishu that killed three civilians.



United States

Another suspect has been detained in Pakistan in connection with Faisal Shahzad’s failed Times Square bombing. Pakistani officials are giving no details other than the man’s name, Humbal Akhtar. Akhtar is one of 11 suspects detained in Pakistan in connection with the plot.


France

Nine suspected terrorists have gone on trial in Paris for acquiring illegal weapons and planning attacks in the country. Two affiliated groups, one based in Besancon and another in Carcassonne, conducted paramilitary training together. The group consists of one Algerian, four Bosnians, and four Frenchmen.


Algeria

A terrorist cell based in Boumerdes has been dismantled after it was discovered that it planned to attack foreign vessels off the Algerian coast. Former Gitmo detainee featured as commander in al Qaeda tape

Uthman-Ghamdi-thumb.JPGOthman Ahmed al Ghamdi, a former Gitmo detainee, has risen within al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s ranks to commander. He is featured in a tape, along with other AQAP leaders, that celebrates the Fort Hood shooting and the failed Christmas Day 2009 attack, and also threatens further attacks on America.






Philippines

Abu Sayyaf fighters kidnapped three employees of a cooperative in a remote village in Basilan. The group was reportedly led by Furuji Indama, a senior leader of the group. Abu Sayyaf has contacted one abductee’s family and demanded a ransom for his release. The employees were intercepted on their way to Isabela City.


Iran

US Secretary of State Clinton criticized Brazil’s diplomacy with Iran. Syrian President Assad said Iran supports informal talks between Syria and Iran. The Iranian navy claimed it detected a US nuclear submarine in the Strait of Hormuz.
