Police arrest 14 citizens in Bahrain for plotting attacks

The Taliban welcomed the troop pullout form the northwest and said negotiations with the military are underway. The military said 34 Taliban were killed during a four-day operation in Swat. The Taliban is enforcing sharia in lower Arakzai. Security forces and the Taliban clashed in Khyber; no casualties were reported.


Somalia

A group called Ahlu Sunna Waljamaa defeated Shabaab during a battle for control of the Guriel district in central Somalia; ten people were killed in the fighting. The deputy minister for the reconciliation was assassinated in Baidoa. Three Ethiopian soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Afgoi.

Afghanistan

A suicide car bomber killed three policemen and two civilians in an attack at a checkpoint outside of Kandahar city. Afghan and Coalition forces killed six Taliban fighters in Helmand province and detained five more in Zabul province. Spain will not send additional troops to Afghanistan.

The Pakistani Army moved a division of troops from tribal areas to the Indian border. A Taliban commander in North Waziristan took credit for the Dec. 24 bombing in Lahore. The government said it would take over the schools run by Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The Taliban bombed a girls’ school in Swat.


Lebanon

Lebanese troops found and dismantled eight Grad and Katyusha rockets set up for launch at northern Israel. Un peacekeepers have stepped up patrols on the border with Israel. Syria will open an embassy in Beirut.



Afghanistan

US and Afghan forces killed 11 Taliban fighters, including a cell leader, during an operation targeting IED cells in the Maiwand district in Kandahar province. A Canadian soldier was killed and three more were wounded in an IED attack in the Zhari district in Kandahar.


Iraq

Six police men and seven al Qaeda prisoners were killed during a jailbreak in Ramadi; three local al Qaeda leaders escaped. Four Iraqis were killed and 25 were wounded in a car bombing in Baghdad. Three soldiers were killed in a bombing in Balad Ruz. Police killed a suicide bomber in Fallujah.
