Yemen is redeploying military units to its northern Sa’ada province, probably for an offensive against Shiite rebels. The rebels charge the regime reneged on a cease-fire agreement by destroying locals’ homes and engaging mass arbitrary arrests. The military destroyed a mosque, shot farmers in the field, and fired on buses according to local media. The World Food Program appealed for funds to feed 77,000 internal refugees, mostly women and children, displaced in Sa’ada since the last round of fighting. Medical supplies, clean water, and gas are extremely scarce in the war-torn governorate due to a governmental blockade.

President Musharraf said Osama bin Laden is likely hiding in a region between Bajaur agency and Kunar province in Afghanistan. Two soldiers were killed in a suicide attack in Kohat. The Taliban beheaded a soldier in Khar, Bajaur. Fazlullah’s uncle and cousin were captured in Swat, along with seven other terrorists. Three soldiers were wounded in an IED ambush in North Waziristan. Nine video shops were bombed in Mardan.

Titled “A Review of Events,” Zawahiri address Iraq, the Petreaus and Crocker reports to Congress, issues with the Islamic State of Iraq, and Al Jazeera’s negative portrayal of Osama bin Laden. Zawahiri also criticizes Egypt for betraying the Palestinian Authority and accuses Hezbollah of having nationalist goals.

Musa Qala tense as Taliban launch rocket attack

Afghan troops killed four Taliban fighters in a clash near the town of Musa Qala in Helmand province; the Taliban has fired rockets into the town. Afghan soldiers uncovered a Taliban safe house near Musa Qala that contained IED-making materials, suicide vests, and uniforms of senior insurgent leadership. Two prepared insurgent sniper positions were also discovered.

Turkish fighter-bombers struck PKK positions inside Iraq. The nightime raid hit positions close to the border with Turkey and the Qandil mountain, which straddles the Iraq-Iran border. The PKK is headquartered in Qandil and runs training camps in the mountains.

Philippine troops killed Mobin Abdurajak, a leader of the Abu Sayyaf Group, in a raid on his hideout in Tawi-Tawi. He was wanted for kidnapping 21 people from the Malaysian resort island of Sipadan in 2000. Negotiations with MILF to create a Muslim homeland have stopped due to issues with economic control.

Abu Bakar Bashir, the spiritual leader of the al Qaeda-allied Jemaah Islamiah, visited the three Bali bombers on death row. “I am worried there will be a huge disaster if Indonesia still wants to execute these three,” Bashir said in a press conference. “Because they three are mujahid (Islamic fighters).” He served 30 months in jail for his involvement with the 2002 Bali bombings.
