The army retrieved the bodies of 15 of the 18 commandos killed during fighting with the Taliban in North Waziristan on Sunday; several were mutilated, with throats cut and limbs hacked off. The South Waziristan tribal jirga claims the army withdrew from checkpoints in order to secure the release of captured soldiers; the military denies this. The military said it is planning to build permanent bases in the tribal areas.
