American jihadists

‘Homegrown terrorism’ has become a major national security concern. The problem is discussed in the Obama administration’s new national security strategy, which states: “Several recent incidences of violent extremists in the United States who are committed to fighting here and abroad have underscored the threat to the United States and our interests posed by individuals radicalized at home.” Further, a new RAND Corporation paper written by Brian Michael Jenkins notes that in 2009, there was “a marked increase in radicalization leading to criminal activity.”

This slideshow illustrates some of the Americans-both those born in the US and also naturalized citizens, like would-be Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad-who have been drawn into active support for jihadism.

There’s a simple solution. Ban radical and moderate Islam by requiring citizenship tests to affirm allegiance to the nation before religion in cases of violence.
My religion, Christianity, won’t have a problem with that, since after the fulfillment of the law by Jesus Christ we’re supposed to be semi-pacifistic until the afterlife battles. Hinduism, Buddhism ( and even Judaism (peaceful diplomatic world union through the Messiah) are fairly peaceful as well. In fact there’s only one major world religion that aims for military dominance of the present Earth…

Nice presentation but I think you may have the wrong picture for Shirwa Ahmed

  • Bill Roggio says:

Stan, that should be fixed now. The current picture is Ahmed. Try reloading the page and let us know if you still see the old pic.

I just shook my head as I watched the slide show until I got to the Duka Brothers. they made me LOL out loud. I guess we are lucky that these home grown terrorists ain’t the sharpest tools in the shed. Why is that?

    Zeissa,
Any addition to the citizenship test is not going to stop the people committed to violent jihad. We have to drain the swamp from where they learn and bring their ideology – Af/Pak region and Saudi petrodollars.
Only a disproportionate use of targeted violence can work for the committed jihadists. The rest of the war effort can incorporate some aspects of COIN ops, but without the overly restrictive RoE currently in place.
And a good deal of this battle still remains a propaganda and psyops battle fought in and around the battlefield. Giving the t-ban propaganda victories in the Korengal valley only means they can tout this as evidence of divine help and recruit more to their ranks. Of course, the problem is we only have so many troops in the theater that can be sustained.
But we only seem to be trying to “perfect” the so-called COIN doctrine, while to a large degree ignoring the other two tactics.
Either we fight the battle with the full might of our forces, or except that our mission is set to expire in A-stan/Paki and reduce our presence while conducting strikes in the region against AQ targets of opportunity.
But the jihadists can only be defeated through the first option, the most we can do is somewhat contain then with the second option.

This man although an American on paper, he was not an American in the least, he was from the Pak, and so was raised in hatred of the West.

Excellent work, as ever. The dates naturally put holes in any “look what we’ve made them do by our interloping” arguments.

These prison conversions are going to be an increasing concern. Criminal thugs and lifelong losers seem to find a fellowship within the most radical and violent fringes of Islam.

We may never succeed at this if we try to over rely on a conventional warfare model in fighting international terrorism.
Al Queda is active in probably (in addition to violating the sovereignty of) well over 40 countries.
We’ve need to out SMART them moreso than to out gun or out armor them.
Al Queda is an international problem, (not just a US problem) and it should mandate an international response. I’ve long advocated something similar to (at least in concept) an international INTERPOL to fight international terrorism.
You are correct when emphasizing that the hate against US (and most of the rest of the world) was already there long before these criminal thugs (now turned into international war criminals) used and abused Islam as a unifying front for their evil intentions.
I do feel though that in order to take the propaganda initiative away from Al Queda due to recent events pertaining, to Gaza that we may as well launch something similar to a Berlin Air Lift of humanitarian aid into Gaza also for the good of Israel.

Bing, I definitely agree with you that exterminating them is important as well as convincing the public of these needs. The Psyops battle in particular would help with passing laws in America and Europe. I am in full agreement with you, except that I perhaps believe the growing fifth coloumn in western society is a greater present and potential threat.
PS. I’m half-Norwegian and half-Chinese, but I’ve considered becoming American as well at times and I identify with your use of ‘we’ in the Western fully and to a high degree in the American sense.

Going by the history of immigrant Muslims in the UK and France, it is a losing battle. The problem is not the older generation of immigrants who seek a better life for themselves and their families. It is the younger generation, born in the West, who are alienated from the dominant culture, and are highly susceptible to propagandists like Al-Awlaki who weave a picture of Muslim superiority and past (and future) greatness. This is a phenomenon that is peculiar to Muslim immigrants (and converts) as other cultures who have emigrated to the West assimilate easily while maintaining their heritage. Look no further than the Hindu immigrants (from the same ethnic background as Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrants) in the UK. They are successful businessmen and professionals who have peacefully integrated into the larger society that they emigrated to. Chinese and Japanese immigrants are yet another example of successful assimilation and integration in the West.
The solution is to limit Muslim immigration and to condition immigration to state-encouraged assimilation (no hijabs, burkhas allowed). Muslim youth have to be carefully monitored, like they are in the UK today, and cracked-down at the first indication of jihadi behavior. Mosques and especially radical preachers also have to be monitored and shut down/deported whenever they cross the line. It is a clash of civilizations we are in; although I would ague that it is more of a clash between civilization (Western and Eastern) and (Islamic) barbarism.

Radicals, are simply radicals. Religion is a crutch (that we all need) for Everyone. Militant attacks on innocent bystanders and the carnage that follows is gruesome. Hate seethes all around a Radical viewpoint. Defense of autonomy and democracy as a sovereign people is worth the battle. Corruption delays understanding among the public. Evil minds plot the massacre of their fellow countrymen, women & children. You cannot martyr yourself by murdering others. You will live eternity in a pool of pigs blood. Peace and understanding should prevail, before we all perish foolishly together. Otherwise, you are going to die before you achieve your potential as a human being. A multitude of options are in our leaders hands right now. Trust them. Radicals, beware of our ability to eliminate your threat. Keep lining up in droves to cause harm to society. We will keep catching up to you. You have HATE in your heart and you will suffer a disgraced death for eternity. We make sure!
