Syrian troops are said to have relocated in advance of threatened US strikes; some reportedly are occupying schools and universities. The military resumed heavy bombardment of East Ghouta, and rebel forces claimed to be taking advantage of the recent dispersal of regime forces seeking to evade US strikes. A number of non-Syrian rebel fighters were killed during an army ambush in Adra, an entry point to East Ghouta; state media claimed those killed were mainly from the Al Nusrah Front. Regime forces arrested a Lebanese man in Tal Alakh for fighting with the Al Nusrah Front. President Assad claimed that the US and France have been unable to provide "the slightest proof" that his regime was responsible for the Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack in Damascus. Russian officials also remain unconvinced by US claims and warned that a US strike would jeopardize the proposed Geneva peace conference.
