Algerian authorities killed Izza Rezki, also known as Abou Djaffar, who was a chief financial backer of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and a close aide to AQIM's leader Abdelmalek Droukdel. Rezki was killed in the suburbs of Bourmedes after he refused to surrender. In Mauritania, 28 AQIM fighters between the ages of 14 and 22 surrendered to security forces.
