Suspected Islamist militants fired grenades at a security checkpoint in Narathiwat province, injuring 30 people. The attack had allegedly been provoked by government attempts to win over local Muslim elders. Elsewhere in southern Thailand, five people died in shootings blamed on militants.

A group of about 100 insurgents surrendered to authorities in Pattani, saying they were tired of fighting. Among them was Wae-ali Copter Waji, who led an attack on an army base in 2004 that killed four soldiers and rekindled violence in the region.

Insurgents killed four soldiers and wounded one more in a roadside bombing in Narathiwat. The soldiers had been providing security at a Buddhist festival. Since 2004, insurgents have killed over 5,000 people in Thailand.

Thai police found a possible link between the recent bombings in Thailand and India. Three Iranian suspects have been arrested; a fourth suspect, Rohani Leila, a 32-year-old woman, is at large. Thai police said the bombings were most likely assassination attempts. Iran denied any role in the attacks.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a second Hezbollah operative who is involved with a plot to conduct attacks against Westerners in Thailand. Atris Hussein, who is in custody, claimed the bomb materials found at his office were planted by Israel’s Mossad.
