Assistant Defense Minister Stuart Robert said that Caner Temel, who died in Syria in January while fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham, was an Australian soldier who had gone AWOL in 2010. He was among six fighters allegedly recruited for al Qaeda-linked groups by Hamdi Alqudsi, 39, a disability pensioner in Granville who is also known as Ibrahim Galiel. Mohammed Ali Baryalei, an Australian suspected of working with Alqudsi, is thought to be in Turkey. Australian intelligence estimates that over 100 Australians have joined the ranks of Syrian rebels.

Australian officials admitted to a “fairly major breakdown” in border security following reports that convicted terrorist Khaled Sharrouf has fled the country. He is thought to be now in Syria. Up to 200 Australians are estimated to have traveled to Syria to fight with the rebels, and about half are said to have joined al Qaeda’s Syrian branch, the Al Nusrah Front, while others have joined the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham.

Authorities canceled the passports of 20 Muslim men from Sydney after the Australian intelligence agency assessed that they were planning to engage in politically motivated violence overseas. One of the 20 is Abu Bakr, who admitted making videos about jihad in Syria. Two Sydney men face charges regarding attempted travel to Syria to join al Qaeda branches there; Hamdi Alqudsi is accused of organizing the recruitment, and Amin Mohammed is another of the suspects. Authorities estimate that about 100 Australians are fighting in Syria.

Attorney General Brandis denied allegations by Hizb ut-Tahrir that the government is harassing members of the group to obtain information. Australia’s Security Intelligence Organisation is said to be stripping passports at more than double the usual rate in an effort to prevent jihadists from traveling to Syria. The ASIO’s 2013 report said “many” Australians have traveled to Syria over the past year, and that as of June, four were known to have died in Syria.
