Australia

Five Sydney men have been sentenced in Australia’s longest and most high profile terror case. The sentences ranged from 23 to 28 years in prison for plotting jihad on Australian soil. The men had been stockpiling chemical explosives and other weapons to carry out the attacks.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, suspect in the failed Christmas airliner attack, said that radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki had instructed him to carry out the attack. Investigators say Abdulmutallab has been cooperating with authorities by giving them information about the radical cleric and Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Two men were arrested today in connection with the Najibullah Zazi terrorism case. Adis Medunjanin, 25, and Zarein Ahmedzay, 24, were apprehended after months of intense investigations in connection with Zazi’s bomb plot. It is reported that the two men traveled to Pakistan with Zazi.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian national who attempted to blow up a flight to Detroit, was arraigned today. Abdulmutallab is facing six charges including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, which is punishable by up to life in prison. He will be arraigned in a US district court in Detroit on Friday.

An al Qaeda-linked Nigerian man was subdued by passengers after attempting to detonate an explosive cocktail during a flight. The Northwest Airlines-chartered plane en route from Amsterdam landed safely at its destination in Detroit.

Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, a 23 year old Georgia man, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for terror related crimes. Sadequee was found guilty on 4 terror related charges, including providing material support to the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

US prosecutors charged American David Headley in connection with the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack. Headley, who was also charged with conspiring to plan attacks in Denmark, is reported to have done reconnaissance on the Mumbai targets on behalf of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

US Army Major Nidal Hasan has been charged with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder for the Nov. 5 shooting rampage at Fort Hood. Hasan has already been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder.

The US Attorney’s office has announced that hearings for David Coleman Headley will be deferred indefinitely. Headley was scheduled for preliminary and detention hearings on Dec. 4 for his role in a conspiracy to carry out attacks abroad on behalf of Lashkar-e-Taiba.
