Cameroon

Boko Haram attacked the village of Mabass in northern Cameroon on Jan. 18, destroying 80 houses and kidnapping between 20 and 80 people. The hostages were subsequently freed as Cameroonian “defence forces pursued the attackers who were heading back to Nigeria.”


Mali

Jihadists attacked the town of Tenenkou in central Mali on Jan. 16, “killing at least three people” before withdrawing after a firefight with soldiers. A car bomb exploded by a bus station in Potiskum in northeast Nigeria, killing four and wounding 35. A doctor’s association in Gombe state has called for an end to a medical workers’ strike, saying that capabilities are overwhelmed by the number of wounded stemming from the Boko Haram insurgency.

The US announced that it will be sending 400 troops to train Syrian moderate opposition forces in the spring. Egypt

Three Bedouins were beheaded by Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis in the Sinai for allegedly “conspiring with Israel,” according to the government; another man was shot and killed for “dealing with” the army. Three additional men were found executed in Rafah, and one woman was injured in a separate shooting.


Libya

A Libyan Army jet attacked a fishing trawler suspected of carrying gasoline to Islamist militias near Benghazi. The UN began peace negotiations in Geneva on Jan. 14; the Islamist Libya Dawn said that it will ignore any outcome from the meeting, which it is boycotting.


Tunisia

President Beji Caid Essebsi urged support for Tunisian security forces in the country’s “war on terrorism.” A soldier was wounded in the neck after he was attacked with a “sharp object by unknown persons” in a suburb of Tunis.


Algeria

The Algerian Army recovered the body of French hiker Hervé Gourdel, who was abducted from the town of Akbil and beheaded by Islamic State-affiliated jihadists. The defense ministry announced the arrest of 12 suspected terrorists during operations conducted in the southern part of the country.

Libya’a rival factions have agreed to attend UN-sponsored peace talks in Geneva. The Italian prime minister has stated that his country would be open to a peacekeeping role in Libya. Algeria

A source in the Algerian security forces said that Sharif and Said Kouachi, the French brothers of Algerian heritage responsible for the Charlie Hebdo massacre, had never visited the country. Other sources said the brothers’ father, who “hailed from Algeria’s eastern province of Souk Ahras,” had not visited the country in 20 years.


Mali
