Five soldiers and a number of Sudanese shepherds who were kidnapped at the Alowianat checkpoint on the border with Sudan were released in exchange for two detained “smugglers”; there have been a number of kidnappings at the checkpoint. Clashes between Tebu tribesmen and Libya Shield militias in Ajdabiyia left at least one person dead, after gunmen attacked a government agricultural project north of Kufra. Last week the GNC passed a law criminalizing the possession of all kinds of weapons, including explosives.

Suspected Islamist militants stormed a factory in Kano, shooting at workers and taking the owner, a Lebanese man, hostage; a man and a woman were wounded in the attack. President Jonathan said that recent accusations by former leader Olusegun Obasanjo threatened national security and “set the stage for subversion.”

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham kidnapped at least 50 Syrian Kurdish civilians from a road near Khan al Asal. The rebel Liwa’ al-Salajika group kidnapped seven civilians, including women, from a Kurdish village near al Bab city on Dec. 20. ISIS also kidnapped over 170 Kurdish civilians earlier this month. A truck bomb in a Shia town in Homs killed at least 12 civilians, including children. Regime barrel bombs in Aleppo reportedly killed 44 civilians, including children. A recent Hamas rocket launch landed in Egyptian territorial waters. Security sources claimed that Ahmed Salama Mabrouk, a member of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, plays a key role in Ansar Jerusalem.

Suspected Islamist insurgents injured 27 people in three bombings in Sadao in the Songkhla tourist area yesterday: a car bomb damaged a hotel and 20 shops, and two bombs exploded near police stations. Suicide bomber strikes security checkpoint near Benghazi, Libya
For the first time since the Libyan revolution, a suicide bomber attacked Libyan security forces. At least several Libyan soldiers were reportedly killed. No group has claimed responsibility, but the Libyan Army has blamed Ansar al Sharia.

The Al Nusrah Front carried out two suicide car bombings outside the al-Kandi hospital in Aleppo city. Islamists and al Qaeda-linked groups took over the hospital, which is near Aleppo Central Prison. Three Hezbollah fighters were killed in clashes with Al Nusrah, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham, and Islamic battalions in Reef Dimashq. Syria’s prime minister blamed Lebanon for facilitating the entry of rebels into Syria, and credited Hezbollah with helping to prevent some of the terrorist activity along the border, particularly in Qusayr. An explosive device went off overnight near a military vehicle south of el Arish. A day after major clashes with Ansar Jerusalem fighters, authorities imposed a curfew for a number of villages near Rafah. Al Gamaa al Islamiya said it plans to oppose the country’s upcoming constitutional referendum. Former president Mohammed Morsi and over 125 others were referred to court over charges related to a mass jailbreak in January 2011.

Rebel forces loyal to former vice president Riek Machar fired on at least two US Osprey aircraft that were on their way to the rebel stronghold of Bor in Jonglei state to evacuate American citizens. Four US troops were wounded in the attack, one seriously. Rebels also fired on and disabled a United Nations helicopter that was attempting to evacuate civilians from Yuai in Jonglei. The US military is reportedly reviewing “further options” to support humanitarian efforts in the country. Machar claimed that his forces have taken over Unity state.

A suicide car bomber detonated at a military base in Barsis, outside Benghazi, killing at least six people and wounding 15 more. Benghazi’s newly appointed head of military intelligence was assassinated yesterday in Derna. The widow of murdered American teacher Ronnie Smith published a letter forgiving her husband’s killers. Attackers stormed the Tripoli offices of two of Libya’s Internet providers, forcing engineers to cut off services to all of western and southern Libya.
