Treasury targets Iran’s ‘secret deal’ with al Qaeda

Atiyah_Rahman.jpgThe US Treasury Department designated six al Qaeda members who work for a terror network based in Iran. One of the six leaders designated today was identified as al Qaeda’s “operations chief” earlier this month; he was also reported to be involved in plotting an attack set to coincide with the tenth anniversary of 9/11.




Iraq

A pair of al Qaeda suicide bombers killed 15 Iraqis in an attack that targeted policemen and soldiers in Tikrit. Insurgents killed two Iraqi soldiers in Mosul.


Yemen

Yemen’s foreign minister said that civil war would break out if President Saleh was forced to step down. An Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula commander and four fighters were killed in an airstrike in Zinjibar.


Iran

Russia’s envoy to NATO said that the US may use the European missile defense shield as “a pretext for preparing an attack on Iran.” Iran said it would continue to attack PJAK bases until Iraq deploys forces to the border.


Somalia

Somali and African Union forces claimed to have taken control of neighborhoods in Mogadishu from Shabaab during fighting that resulted in four people killed. Several Shabaab suspects were detained in connection with the bombing in Mandera in Kenya that killed four soldiers.



Eritrea

A UN report said Eritrean intelligence officers were involved in the plot to carry out attacks in Addis Ababa in January 2011 to disrupt the African Union summit. The plot involved car bomb attacks at the AU headquarters, Africa’s largest market, and an area where dignitaries were housed.

Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber assassinated the mayor of Kandahar City. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, HIG, and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leaders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Ghazni, Wardak, Kunduz, and Jawzjan.


Iraq

Security forces killed an al Qaeda leader west of Mosul. President Talibani pardoned 50 Mahdi Army fighters and leaders. The Mahdi Army’s Promised Day Brigade claimed it carried out five attacks over the past week against US forces in Baghdad, Dhi Qar, Wasit, and Maysan.
