Australia: Islamist given nine-year sentence for terrorism


Lashkar-e-Taiba

A court postponed a hearing for Lashkar-e-Taiba operations chief Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi and six others for their connections to the Mumbai terror assault in 2008. A two-judge panel will review a petition on Lashkar-e-Taiba founder and leader Hafiz Saeed on charges that he encouraged and raised money for jihad.

Fifteen Iraqi soldiers were killed while trying to defuse a car bomb in a facility north of Mosul. Iraqi forces detained 66 wanted men in Dhi Qhar, 17 terrorists during raids nationwide, 14 insurgents in Kirkuk, and four escaped al Qaeda prisoners. Two policemen were wounded in an IED attack in Baghdad.

Five ISAF soldiers were killed during three separate engagements. Afghan and Coalition forces killed 20 Taliban fighters in Helmand and Nimroz provinces and detained six Haqqani Network fighters in Khost. Five Taliban fighters were killed during clashes between two rival groups in Herat.


Iran

Iranian officials admitted to building a second, secret enrichment facility. Western governments accused Iran of constructing the secret underground plant to manufacture nuclear fuel for weapons. Geneva will host the 5+1 talks on Iran’s nuclear program on Oct. 1.


Pakistan

A US airstrike killed eight Haqqani Network fighters in an attack in North Waziristan. The Taliban killed seven pro-government tribal leaders during an attack in Bannu. The military killed eight Taliban fighters in Malakand and detained three more in Hangu.
