The US Justice Department is supporting the efforts of the Saudi royal family to have five princes removed from a lawsuit filed by the families of Sept. 11 victims. The lawsuit contends that the five princes knew that the charities they were donating to were diverting funds to al Qaeda. The Justice Department contends that the Saudi royal family cannot be sued in a US court.

The Taliban kidnapped more than 300 cadets and teachers in North Waziristan, killed four people during a bombing at a bus stand in Kohat, and bombed a school in Mohmand. The military said 37 Taliban fighters were killed and 13 were captured in Buner, Swat, and South Waziristan. The Anti-Terrorism Court sent 84 Hizb-ul-Tahrir workers to prison for protesting. Security forces detained a “high value terrorist” from Buner for beheading “spies” and executing suicide attacks on Special Branch and Frontier Constabulary barracks in Islamabad.

Two former directors of Bangladesh’s National Security Intelligence testified that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency and the ARY Group plotted to smuggle weapons into the country to pass along to the Indian terrorist group ULFA. Ten trucks laden with weapons were seized by police during an operation in Chittagong. The two directors were arrested for involvement in the plot.

Afghan troops killed five more Taliban fighters during an ongoing operation in the Balamurghab district in Badghis province. Afghan and Coalition forces killed four Taliban fighters and detained two more in the Saydabad district in Wardak province, and detained one Taliban fighter in Ghazni province. Four NATO soldiers were killed in a bombing in eastern Afghanistan. Four US soldiers were killed in two IED strikes in the Nirkh district in Wardak province.

Security forces detained 46 insurgents in Kirkuk, 14 wanted men in Basrah, and the ex-chairman of the Karbala provincial council, and prevented a suicide attack in Diyala. Four Iraqis were killed and 15 were wounded in two bombings in Baghdad.

Iran closed its border with Pakistan. Security forces defused a homemade bomb found on a domestic flight. Iran executed three men for complicity in last week’s mosque bombing in Zahedan and detained “a number of individuals who intended to create insecurity” in the city.

A Russian soldier and an insurgent were killed in a shootout in Dagestan’s capital. In North Ossetia, two people were killed in a drive-by shooting. An explosive device on a vehicle in Ingusetia killed three people; they may have been insurgents killed accidentally. On Saturday, three officers were killed in Chechnya during two separate explosions.
