Israeli Arab killed in Syria fought with Al Nusrah Front

Mueid Juma'a - Israel Syria 2.jpgOn Sept. 17, Threat Matrix reported that Mueid Juma’a, 28, had become the first Israeli killed in Syria since the start of the civil war.

At the time, Threat Matrix noted that “[i]t is not clear what opposition group Juma’a, who was said to be “religious,” was fighting with or where and when he was killed.” Subsequent press reports as well as images and video from Juma’a’s hometown indicate that he was fighting alongside al Qaeda-linked forces in Syria.

On Sept. 18, Agence France Presse reported that relatives of Juma’a said he had fought with the Al Nusrah Front in Syria. Reuters similarly quoted Juma’a’s father as saying that it was likely his son had fought with al Qaeda-linked fighters.
