A Taliban operative who was responsible for the death of an American soldier in May 2012 died along with an associate in a precision airstrike in Kunar’s Ghaziabad district. ISAF had claimed it killed the operative last September.
Asadullah Khalid, the chief of Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security, was wounded in an attack at an NDS guesthouse today by a Taliban suicide bomber posing as a peace envoy.
“The nightmare that surreptitiously looms on British shores is bound to eclipse the horrors of 7/7 and 21/7 combined,” Shabaab said on its Twitter account.
Moezeddine Garsallaoui, a Swiss citizen, led the al Qaeda-linked group, and trained Mohamed Merah, the Toulouse shooter who killed seven people. He appears to have been killed in a drone strike.
The suspension of combined combat patrols by units below the battalion level takes place as green-on-blue attacks continue to spike.
Qais al Qazali, the leader of the League of the Righteous, said a controversial film “will put all the American interests Iraq in danger.” Qazali was released from custody by the US in 2009.
And in Cairo, Islamist protesters climbed the walls of the US embassy, took down the American flag, and raised the al Qaeda flag in its place. The two attacks, which occurred on Sept. 11, are the first such attacks on US diplomatic facilities in Egypt and Libya.
As green-on-blue attacks spike, US and Afghan military officials have taken increasingly strong measures to combat attacks on their forces by Taliban infiltrators and disgruntled Afghan troops. In 2012, green-on-blue attacks accounted for 15% of ISAF deaths.
