Pakistan

Four NATO fuel tankers were destroyed in an attack at the Torkham border crossing. Four Frontier Corps troops were kidnapped in Lakki Marwat and two anti-Taliban tribesmen were murdered in Swat. Mullah Nazir demanded the government apologize for US airstrikes.


Iran

Iran closed its border with Pakistan after a suicide car bomber detonated at a police station in the Iranian border town of Saravan. More than 45 Iranian security personnel were killed in the attack on the joint headquarters of the Iranian police and anti-narcotics squad. Jundallah is suspected of carrying out the attack.



Somalia

Interim President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed resigned from office today after months of fighting with Somalia’s parliament. Eight more people were killed in the third day of fighting between Shabaab and a rival Islamist militia in Guriel. Ethiopian troops have moved into the Hiran region.


Hezbollah

Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah called for Arab solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza, who are fighting what he called “the third intifada.” Egypt criticised Nasrallah for promoting anarchy in the country.

Iraqi forces detained 51 suspected insurgents in Basrah, eight wanted men in Babil, eight wanted insurgents in raids nationwide, and three terrorists in Diyala. Two civilians were killed in attacks in Mosul and one civilian was wounded in a suicide attack in Tal Afar.


Afghanistan

The Taliban took credit for yesterday’s suicide attack in Khost province that killed 14 school children. Two Afghans were killed in a suicide attack in Parwan province and three more were killed in a bombing in Spin Boldak in Kandahar province. Coalition and Afghan forces killed two Taliban fighters in Ghazni province.

A Taliban suicide bomber killed 35 Pakistani in an attack on a polling station in Buner. The Taliban murdered three “US spies” in North Waziristan. Four Taliban fighters were wounded in clashes with security forces in Mohmand. The military deployed anti-aircraft guns in Gujranwala.

Fourteen children and two policemen were killed and 58 others were wounded in a suicide attack in Khost province. Two Canadian soldiers were killed in an IED attack in the Panjwai district in Kandahar province. Afghan and ISAF forces captured a senior Taliban commander in Logar province.
