Suspected Islamist militants fired grenades at a security checkpoint in Narathiwat province, injuring 30 people. The attack had allegedly been provoked by government attempts to win over local Muslim elders. Elsewhere in southern Thailand, five people died in shootings blamed on militants.
A group of about 100 insurgents surrendered to authorities in Pattani, saying they were tired of fighting. Among them was Wae-ali Copter Waji, who led an attack on an army base in 2004 that killed four soldiers and rekindled violence in the region.
In a policy change, the government is holding peace talks with Muslim separatists. Government forces have been trying to suppress a Muslim insurgency in the southern provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala since 2004.
