Secretary of State Kerry urged support for a US military intervention in Syria, arguing that the US must show the Assad regime it cannot use chemical weapons with impunity. He said the intervention could include boots on the ground but not "with respect to the civil war." President Obama said the intervention would involve a "broader strategy" to upgrade the Syrian opposition while degrading the capabilities of the Assad regime. General Dempsey, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate that Russia might help Syria replace assets destroyed by a US attack. Polls show that most Americans, from all parties, oppose the idea of intervening militarily in Syria. The top Democratic and Republican House leaders expressed support for the intervention.
